Becoming a Jira Administrator
Jira Administration is a rewarding, high-paying career that bridges the worlds of Business, IT, and Tech. Many admins get started as end users, first working on Jira as part of a team using it to track their work. This is often true for software developers, project and product managers, or help desk technicians.
There are generally three ways you become a Jira Administrator
Tag, you’re it.
At some point, your boss informs you of your new responsibility. You will now learn through trial-by-fire while gasping for water because you’re also in the deep end of the pool. After a while, you’re able to answer questions without relying on Google Search. You start learning how to help users through your Jira knowledge, and eventually build up enough skills to be able to get hired on your next job directly as a Jira Administrator.
Self-study
You somehow develop an interest in becoming a Jira Admin. Maybe you had to help out with it before or maybe you’ve seen the numerous job postings on LinkedIn and it piqued your curiosity. You wade through the official documentation, user forums, and outdated YouTube videos. Eventually you stumble upon an online course that could take you a few hours to complete, but it’s hard to make it stick without accountability. Eventually, you learn enough for someone to take a chance on you, and now you can begin putting what you learned to test in real-world scenarios. Oof, you made it!
Courses and certifications
The two methods above are how most of the current Jira Administrators got started, but it can be a grueling journey. Furthermore, preparing for a certification exam on your own can prove challenging, especially without prior hands-on experience with Jira out in the real world.
Existing short-term Jira boot camps or crash courses may help you understand how to spin up a Jira instance and do some basic configuration, but they are typically only a few days long and light on hands-on work.
